Hollow Knight

After playing Silksong, perhaps I treated you too harshly. Not that Silksong is bad–far from it. It’s just way too over tuned in difficulty, so this game has gotten some extra retroactive appeal. Funny how the hitboxes were also a problem here, too. Oh just you wait, you sweet summer child.

A gorgeous, adorable, challenging, and fascinating journey into a world of cute and creepy buggos. The snappiest movement in any metroidvania i’ve played so far, with combat thats unforgiving but not impossible to master. The music is fantastic, the animation is some of the best in any form of media, the atmosphere is endlessly lovable, and the lore is super enticing to uncover. Exploring is fun, collecting and using charms is fun. The Grubs are the cutest video game characters full stop. They give me life, man. 🥺

However, this game is held back by hella jank. Platforming can be unnecessarily lengthy when the SIDE of spikes can also kill you. The double jump just BARELY does its job in getting you places. Enemies also can move in predictable, but inconvenient paths which cause their oddly large hitboxes to smack you. Using Soul is also unpredictable as pressing the button a picosecond before hitting the ground after a hit negates the action at all. Some bosses are just plain frustrating, Flukemarm and Watcher Guards especially.
