Marvel’s Spider-Man PS4

8.3/10 – haven’t beaten the story

January 2024

Fun swinging and traversal, it’s tons of fun to go around the city, maximize momentum, jump straight into combat, and perform tricks. Movement has never felt this good.

The map of Manhattan is gorgeous and fun to explore. Lots of good times finding places I’ve visited as well as buildings from Marvel history (Sanctum Sanctorum, Avengers Tower, Oscorp Building). Nice nods to Spider-Man history with the suits.

Overall very immersive, I really felt like Spider-Man. Juggling fighting supervillains, common crooks, as well as life as Peter Parker. Yuri Lowenthal knocks it out of the park.

Combat can be fun and freestyle-y. Makes it feel frantic and urgent like how Spidey is probably feeling, but also forfeits control. There are a lot of cool moves you can do (swing kick, throw items, webs and gadgets, launching) but it doesn’t feel as diverse as DMC or Bayonetta combat. It’s mostly just mashing square in different combinations.

Riddled with common stupid ass AAA title tropes that pad the game. Forced walking cutscenes, random puzzles that aren’t challenging, just there to worldbuild but drag out the run time. MJ and Miles (i love him tho) stealth missions. “Game Over” QTEs. Room inspection, where you’re given the illusion of control but are still listening to people yap as you click on things in a room. I wanna play the actual game, dammit! Some puzzles were fun but got old fast, especially towards the end where I really wanted to progress and see the story. Some of them can be skipped too, so why are they even there?!?

Side content is eh, it’s fun to check off missions and items on the map, but there’s little variety in what you actually do. Most missions and research tasks have you swing through checkpoints (SUPERMAN 64 WOOO) or chase something.
